Think, act, disrupt

Aim to achieve non-inflamed, non-infected wounds. To help guide when to act on infection:2

Think

  • Contamination: Unless compromised, the patient will respond and destroy bacteria
  • Colonisation: Limited, non-critical proliferation of microbes that won’t affect wound progression

Act

  • Localised: A deeper presence in the wound tissue, but currently contained in one location, system or structure
  • Spreading: Infection present in surrounding tissue with signs and symptoms beyond the wound border, potentially into deep tissue, muscle, fascia organs or body cavities
  • Systemic: Microorganisms spread through the vascular or lymphatic systems and can affect the whole body

Disrupt

  • Biofilm: Occurs in 78% of wounds, causing constant inflammation, delayed healing and treatment failure. Effective assessment and identification is essential to initiate the correct treatment3-4
