ADVANCED WOUND MANAGEMENT
Surgical site complications (SSCs) and infections
Post-operative complications in closed surgical incisions, such as dehiscence (a partial or total separation of wound edges) and surgical site infection (SSI) represent a substantial burden on global healthcare systems1
Understanding the impact
Around 250 million major surgical procedures are performed each year worldwide1 and SSCs have the potential to influence patient outcomes, length of hospital stay or readmissions and use of adjuvant therapies.1,2
SSIs in particular are estimated to occur 500,000 times each year.*1 They may result in:
- Estimated costs of $400 to $30,000 per patient, depending on severity*1
- Up to a 2- to 11-fold increase in mortality risk, compared to patients without SSIs3
- The loss of 8,000 people every year*1
Yet, up to 60% of SSIs may be preventable.1
