In our pursuit to transform outcomes for patients, clinicians and healthcare systems, we were honored to partner with the British Orthopaedic Association (BOA) and The St Roch Group, a group of like-minded surgeons who are dedicated to the enhancement of patient care and outcomes through education and training.
In September, we supported a training and education initiative at the Muhimbili Orthopaedic Institute (MOI) in Dar Es Salaam, Tanzania. We donated £15,000 and three camera stacks, as well as trauma and wound care products to assist in ACL reconstruction and meniscal repairs, osteotomies, paediatric cases and surgeon training.
Smith+Nephew UK representatives, Elizabeth Turp (Cluster Marketing manager- Knee Sports Medicine) and Stephen Dugmore (Account Manager) joined the team in Tanzania to support the St Roch team, helping to train local surgeons on clinical assessment and surgical techniques such as ACL repair, meniscal repair and osteotomy, supporting health care professionals to achieve the best outcomes for patients with the tools we donated.
Through this initiative, the St Roch and MOI teams were able to complete approximately 28 surgeries during their 12 day stay in Tanzania.
Elizabeth Turp, Cluster Marketing Manager at Smith+Nephew said, “It was a great privilege to be able to organize and take part in this project. From going into the unknown, the local and St Roch teams learnt so much from one another. Not only were we able to help patients regain their quality of life, the St Roch team also educated the local surgeons in new surgical principals, giving them the tools to advance their practice and offering for the future.”
